Q2: How difficult is this trek?
The trek is challenging and suited for experienced trekkers. It involves steep ascents, high-altitude walking, and rugged terrain. Trekkers must have good fitness levels and prior experience in long-duration, high-altitude expeditions for a safe experience.
Q3: What is the total duration of the trek?
The trek takes around 9-10 days, covering approximately 70 km. The duration depends on weather conditions, trekking speed, and necessary acclimatization stops to adjust to the high altitude safely.
Q4: When is the best time to do this trek?
The best time is May to June and September to October. These months provide stable weather, clear skies, and accessible trails. Monsoon brings landslides, and winter makes the trail inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.
Q5: How do I reach the starting point?
The trek begins from Munsiyari, Uttarakhand, which is accessible by road from Kathgodam. The nearest railway station is Kathgodam, and the closest airport is Pantnagar, from where road transport options are available.

Yes, trekkers need a permit from the Uttarakhand Forest Department. Since the trek enters restricted and ecologically sensitive areas, obtaining permits in advance is necessary for legal and environmental reasons.
Q7: What kind of accommodation is available?
Accommodation consists of homestays in villages and tented camps along the trekking route. Since this is a remote trek, lodging options are basic, and trekkers must be prepared for limited amenities.

The highest point of the trek is at Ralam Dhura Pass, which reaches an elevation of 5,312 meters (17,428 feet). Proper acclimatization and gradual ascent are essential to handle the altitude.

Yes, altitude sickness is a potential risk due to the high elevation. Trekkers must acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and ascend gradually to avoid symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and dizziness.

The region is home to rare Himalayan wildlife, including snow leopards, Himalayan tahrs, blue sheep, and a variety of high-altitude birds. Lucky trekkers may spot these elusive species in their natural habitat.
Q11: Are guides necessary?
Yes, hiring a guide is strongly recommended. The terrain is tough, trails are unmarked, and weather conditions can be unpredictable. A guide ensures safety, navigation, and a better understanding of the landscape.
Q12: I am a solo traveller, can I join the Ralam Dhura Pass Trek?

Blog - Ralam Dhura Pass Trek: A Quick Guide
Most people haven’t even heard of it, which, let’s be honest, is kind of the point. It’s tucked away in the Johar Valley up in Uttarakhand, and if you’re picturing some Instagram-influencer-infested trail, nope. This one’s wild, untouched, and honestly, a bit of a pain to get to (in the best way). You kick things off at Munsiyari, which is this charming little hill town with killer views of the Panchachuli peaks (if the clouds don’t mess with you). You snake through villages like Lilam and Big Udyar, each one feels straight out of a travel magazine, except, you know, with real people living there. The cultural vibes are strong. Locals still talk about the days when Bhotia traders used the pass for business. History isn’t just in books here; it’s under your boots. Ralam Glacier. It’s this massive, sparkling slab of ice, surrounded by jagged peaks that make you feel like you accidentally wandered onto the set of a fantasy movie. The trail’s tough, not for first-timers or people who think “adventure” means a bumpy Uber ride. You’re in for some heavy breathing, sore calves, and, if you’re lucky, some mind-blowing stargazing from your tent at night. Don’t even get me started on the valleys Ralam and Pachu. Both are the kind of place you’d expect elves to pop out of, honestly. Campsites here are next-level, and since hardly anyone treks out this far, you’ll probably have the stars all to yourself. It’s the remoteness. No Wi-Fi, no crowds, no overpriced cafés selling “authentic” chai. Just you, the mountains, and maybe a couple of mountain goats who couldn’t care less about your selfie game. It’s raw, it’s rugged, and it’s ridiculously beautiful. If you want a trek that’s all thrill, all soul, and zero tourist traps, Ralam Dhura is your jam. Just don’t wait for peak season (May–June, September–October) to fill up, because it’s only a matter of time before word gets out.History of Ralam Dhura Pass TrekRalam Dhura Pass Trek, no stiff textbook stuff, just the good bits. Tucked way up in Uttarakhand’s Johar Valley (Pithoragarh district, for the map nerds), this pass used to be the “it” spot for the old-school Bhotia traders. We’re talking semi-nomadic mountain folk, herding their yaks and mules through some seriously wild terrain. The place sits pretty much at the crossroads of India, Nepal, and Tibet. Back in the day, you’d find long caravans snaking their way through here, swapping wool and salt for grains and cloth. Business, but with a side of “don’t freeze to death in an avalanche.” The name’s got a bit of flair, too. “Ralam” comes from a local word that means “the way of the gods.” Kinda poetic, right? “Dhura” just means “pass” in Kumaoni, no frills there. This wasn’t some random goat trail either. Ralam Dhura was plugged into a whole network of ancient Himalayan trade routes (think Lipulekh, Niti, the works). Now, the Bhotias, especially the Johari crew, weren’t your average traders. These were hardcore mountaineers, braving snowstorms and dodging avalanches like it was just another Tuesday. Their journeys weren’t just about making a buck, either; they were mixing cultures, sharing stories, and, yeah, probably complaining about the weather a lot. Then, 1962 rolled around and everything went belly-up. The Indo-China War slammed the borders shut. Suddenly, all that trading across Ralam Dhura stopped dead. The Bhotia folks had to pack it in, move down to lower altitudes, and the pass just sort of slipped out of the spotlight. Silence. Crickets. But here’s the twist nowadays, Ralam Dhura madhe a bit of a comeback, not as a trade highway, but as a magnet for trekkers and adventure junkies. Instead of mules with wool, you get backpackers huffing up the trail to see glaciers and abandoned stone houses. The Ralam and Pachu Glaciers are major draws, and crossing the pass? That’s a badge of honour for the hardcore trek crowd. The villages Martoli, Lilam, Ralam and a handful of others still cling to their old-school charm. You’ll spot Buddhist prayer flags flapping in the wind, stone houses that look like they’ve stood there since forever, and locals who’ll spin you wild stories if you hang around the tea shop long enough. People are finally catching on to the idea of “sustainable tourism” here, so you get to soak up the history and scenery without totally wrecking the place. It’s a win-win: trekkers get their adventure fix, locals get a shot at some extra income, and the Ralam Dhura Pass keeps its legends alive. Not just some relic of forgotten trade, more like a stubborn old mountain, still connecting people across time.Nearby Places Around Ralam Dhura Pass TrekMunsiyari: This place is the launchpad for the Ralam Dhura Pass Trek, and honestly, it’s a total knockout if you’re even a little into mountains. We’re talking 2,200 meters up in the clouds, with those ridiculous Panchachuli peaks staring you down every morning. Picture-perfect, yeah, but also buzzing with Kumaoni energy, a cool mix of old-school traditions and folks who seem happy to see trekkers. Before you hit the trails, you gotta wander through the Munsiyari Bazaar (snag some momos or woollies), check out the Tribal Museum, and maybe chase some waterfalls. Birthi Falls is pretty epic, no joke.Ralam Village: Ralam’s where things start to get wild. This place is tucked so deep into the Johar Valley, you’ll feel like you’ve fallen off the map. It’s the last village before you vanish into glacier country and over the Ralam Dhura Pass. Don’t expect luxury, think more "sleeping under heavy blankets while the stars go nuts above you." It’s all about that old-school Bhotia lifestyle out here. Plus, surrounded by glaciers and massive peaks, it’s the ultimate spot to catch your breath (and maybe question your life choices) before you climb higher.Ralam Glacier: Ralam Glacier is the big-ticket item, no contest. Split into Upper and Lower Ralam, this chunk of ancient ice is wild, rugged, and, thankfully, not mobbed by tourists. You want raw, untouched Himalayas, Perfect for pitching a tent, snapping a million photos, or just standing around feeling tiny. Oh, and the glacier feeds the Gori Ganga River, so, like, thank it for all the snowmelt drama downstream.Martoli Village: Martoli feels like stepping into a history book nobody’s bothered to update. Used to be a major trading hotspot, now it’s mostly empty, full of stone houses that look like they’ve seen a thousand monsoons and Buddhist vibes all over. If you’re the type who gets jazzed about abandoned places and old stories, detour here. The views of Nanda Devi East? Unreal. You’ll want to linger, trust me.Lilam Village: Lilam’s your first real pit stop from Munsiyari, sort of like the "stretch your legs and freak out about the river" spot. Forests everywhere, Gori Ganga roaring by, and a vibe that just screams "set up camp here." It’s not just pretty; it’s where your lungs start getting used to the whole altitude thing. Bring snacks. You’ll want to chill for a minute.Milam Glacier Trek: Okay, technically this one’s on a different trail, but if you’re feeling extra ambitious (or just can’t get enough ice), Milam Glacier is a total classic. Used to be buzzing with traders now the Milam village is ghost town territory.Nanda Devi East Base Camp: Nanda Devi East Base Camp, not too far from the Ralam side of things, is the stuff of trekking legends. The trail’s a beast, but the reward is face-to-face time with India’s second-highest mountain (and, honestly, one of the most badass peaks around). The route winds through Johar Valley, so you’re getting the full Himalayan drama, end to end. For hardcore trekkers only, no posers allowed.Best Time to Visit Ralam Dhura Pass TrekSummer (May-June): If you’re eyeing the Ralam Dhura Pass Trek, May and June are your golden ticket. The weather is Pretty chill (well, for the mountains). Skies are mostly clear, temps won’t freeze your toes off, and you get to see stuff like green valleys, wildflowers doing their thing, and jaw-dropping snow peaks. The snow finally backs off, so trails are open, but it’s still wild enough to feel like an adventure. Not too easy, not too crazy. Sweet spot for trekkers who want a bit of everything.Post-Monsoon/Autumn (September-Early October): If you missed summer, no sweat, September and early October are legit too. The rains have packed up and left everything looking all fresh and green. The air’s crisp, the views are stupidly good, and the trails? Not slippery death traps anymore. Plus, fewer people are crowding the place, so you’ll hear yourself think (and breathe).Monsoon (July-August): Look, unless you’re into landslides, mud baths, and hiking in a cloud, skip July and August. The rain gets out of hand, trails get wrecked, and flash floods? Not exactly Insta-worthy. Even getting to Munsiyari base can turn into a mission; trains, roads, everything goes wonky. Hard pass.Winter (November-April): Winter here is basically “Nope Season.” Snow dumps down, everything freezes, and the pass vanishes under a white blanket. Unless you’re some hardcore mountaineer with a death wish (and a lot of fancy gear), don’t even think about it.How to Reach Ralam Dhura Pass TrekBy Airport: Pantnagar’s your gateway. “Close” is a stretch; it’s more like 250 km away from Munsiyari, where the real trek party starts. Flights from Delhi hit Pantnagar, so, cool, but you’re not done yet. Get ready for a taxi or a bus, and then, oh boy, brace yourself. It’s an 8-10 hour road trip. The views are nuts, mountains everywhere, and valleys doing their thing.By Train: Train nerds, Kathgodam is calling. It’s about 275 km from Munsiyari. You’ve got trains rolling in from Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, so take your pick. Once you stumble off the train, you can cram into a shared jeep (good luck, introverts), grab your cab if you’re feeling fancy, or just hop on a local bus. someone cranked the nature setting to max.By Road: Roadtrip junkies, this is your jam. Munsiyari connects up with Haldwani, Almora, Pithoragarh, and Kathgodam roads are decent, shockingly. Buses and taxis are your chariots. Heads up: it’s a loooong ride. Buckle up for 600 km, seriously, 18-20 hours of driving. Unless you’re some sort of superhuman robot, you’ll want to crash somewhere halfway. Why Book with escape2exploreWhen exploring the Ralam Dhura Pass Trek from Bengaluru and beyond, escape2explore stands out as a trusted name in adventure and experiential travel.
